When involved in an accident, your first worry is about the people. Is everyone okay? Did anyone get hurt? The next worry is then, usually, about the financial cost. Not many people have cash just sitting around to pay for repairs.
Even those with insurance are concerned, as most have a deductible. Some people have heard about autobody shops that waive deductibles, and occasionally we also get asked about this. With this in mind, we thought it may be a good idea to shed some light on the subject.
It is actually illegal to waive deductibles because the deductible is part of your contract with your insurance company. The deductible serves to activate your policy so that the insurance company will pay for the rest of the repairs. At Schaefer, we work closely with you and your insurance company to make certain that the process runs smoothly.
That said, some insurance companies do offer a little-known provision that could save you money: an appearance allowance. This involves a choice to leave an estimated repair undone. Let’s say you have some minor cosmetic damage on a portion of your vehicle. It won’t impact your vehicle’s performance or safety, and won’t cause problems later on down the road (such as rust). For whatever reason, you aren’t bothered by it and you’d rather not spend any money on the damage. With approval from your insurance company, we can leave the scratch as is and take a percentage of that estimated repair off of your deductible.
If you have a question about whether an appearance allowance makes sense for you, just ask. Our qualified technicians can determine whether or not your vehicle will suffer any long-term negative effects. Also, our knowledgeable customer service representatives can share with you if your insurance company allows for such adjustments.
We are happy to work with you in whatever way we can to help you after an accident. You can trust that when we return your vehicle to you, you will have experienced a high level of customer service from a company of integrity and professionalism!
